Magnitude-6.9 aftershock rocks Chile

UPDATED: SANTIAGO, Chile -- A series of strong aftershocks from last month's devastating quake rocked Chile on Thursday as a new president was sworn into office and immediately urged coastal residents to move to higher ground in case of a tsunami. The strongest aftershock, with a magnitude of 6.9, was nearly as strong as the quake that devastated Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, on Jan. 12. There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. The Chilean Navy issued a tsunami warning while the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the aftershocks were too small to cause dangerous waves beyond Chile's central ...

Obama: Situation in Haiti remains 'dire'

President Obama said Wednesday that living conditions in Haiti remain "dire," despite recovery efforts since the Jan. 12 earthquake. He was joined at his White House speech by Haitian President Rene Preval, who called for improvements to the United Nations' disaster response. "People should be under no illusions that the crisis is over," Mr. Obama said during the Rose Garden ceremony. "Many Haitians are still in need -- desperate need in some cases -- of shelter and food and medicine. And with the spring rains approaching, those needs will only grow. The challenge now is to prevent a second disaster." ...

President Obama on Wednesday renewed America's commitment to the recovery and reconstruction of earthquake-devastated Haiti, telling visiting President Rene Preval he knows the crisis has not passed. U.S. to Haiti: Don't delay elections

The Obama administration on Tuesday warned Haiti against a long delay of elections previously scheduled for early next year to ensure that the billions of dollars in international aid pledged after the January earthquake are spent by a legitimate government. During a visit to Washington to thank the administration for its massive rescue and relief efforts, Haitian President Rene Preval said a parliamentary vote planned for February is likely to be postponed because of the devastation caused by the Jan. 12 quake. "Everybody will understand that, due to the conditions, how difficult it will be to respect that timetable and ...

Haiti frees U.S. missionary

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitian authorities have released one of the last two U.S. Baptist missionaries jailed for trying to take orphans out of the country after the earthquake. Charisa Coulter left her cell Monday accompanied staff of the U.S. Embassy. The Idaho woman was arrested Jan. 29 with nine other Americans while trying to leave Haiti with 33 children without the proper documents. They say they were trying to help orphans after the earthquake. Eight of the Americans had been already been released. Still in custody is their leader, Laura Silsby.

Stitching Haiti's economy together

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti | Jordanie Pinquie Rebeca leans forward and guides a piece of suit-jacket wool and its silky lining into a sewing machine, where — bat! bat! bat! — they're bound together to be hemmed. If she does this for eight hours, she will earn $3.09. Her boss will ship the pinstriped suit she helped make to the United States, tariff-free. There, a shopper will buy it from Jos. A. Bank Clothiers for $550. In the quest to rebuild Haiti, the international community and business leaders are dusting off a pre-quake plan to expand its low-wage garment-assembly industry as a ...
